Why EliteAyurveda

How are we able to Treat Bullous Pemphigoid

Bullous Pemphigoid is a rare autoimmune disorder that causes blistering of the skin. It produces everything from itchy, hive-like welts to big, fluid-filled blisters that can become infected. Bullous pemphigoid can affect only a small portion of the body or it might infect the entire body. It usually develops on armpits, upper thighs and abdomen.

Bullous pemphigoid is a rare skin disorder that affects mostly persons in their forties and fifties. It produces everything from itchy, hive-like welts to big, fluid-filled blisters that can become infected. Bullous pemphigoid can affect only a small portion of the body or it might infect the entire body. It usually develops on armpits, upper thighs and abdomen.

“Visphota'' is defined in Ayurveda as a condition in which eruptions of burn-like vesicles (Agnidagdha sphota) develop all over the body or on a specific spot and are accompanied by fever. The symptoms arise when Rakta and Pitta are vitiated. Visphoa is characterized by the appearance of sphota (blisters) all over the body, as well as a burning feeling, fever, and thirst. It's also known as Shveta arunavabhasa sphota (whitish-red) and Tanu tvak (skin over the rash will grow thin), and it's caused by Pitta and Kapha dosha vitiation.

According to Ayurveda, this condition is due to an imbalance in the body's doshas, particularly Pitta and Kapha, and the presence of toxins (Ama) that hinder the natural healing process.

Bullous pemphigoid treatment in Ayurveda suggests removal of toxins from the body and balancing the vitiated doshas. The treatment includes multiple detoxification of the body, intake of internal medications to balance the vitiated doshas, external application of herbal formulations along with maintenance of proper diet and lifestyle.

Acharya Charaka in Charaka Samhita, Chikitsa Sthana, 7/30, mentions:

"Kushta" - A term for various skin diseases caused by the vitiation of Vata, Pitta, and Kapha doshas, leading to conditions characterized by scaling and discoloration.

This shloka explains that conditions like Bullous Pemphigoid are related to dosha imbalances and can be managed by pacifying these doshas.

What is Bullous Pemphigoid?

Bullous Pemphigoid is a rare autoimmune disorder that causes blistering of the skin. It is characterized by the formation of large, fluid-filled blisters due to the immune system attacking the basement membrane of the skin.

Treatment

At Elite Ayurveda, treatment for bullous pemphigoid starts with understanding of patients’ constitution of body and observing the impact of dominant dosha. Further, the treatment can be noted as below:

Detoxification: In order to eradicate toxins from the body, internal medications are administered to induce vomiting and loose stools. This is a step involved in Panchakarma treatment, which is helpful in purification of the body. It also involves Raktamokshana (purification of blood), Vamana (Therapeutic emesis) and virechana (purgation).

Internal medications: Medications like Guluchyadi kasayam, Mustadi kasaya, Kulakadi kasaya, Chandanasava, etc. are prescribed in order to balance the vitiated doshas and help in a bullous pemphigoid condition.

External application: This involves massage over the affected area with lepam, panchatwagadi churna, nyagrodadi churna, etc. It may also involve the process of seka in some cases.
