How Does Our Laryngitis Treatment Benefit You?

Laryngitis is a condition in which the larynx (voice box) is inflamed due to its over usage, infection or irritation. The vocal cords are present in the larynx which consists of two folds of mucous membranes covering the muscles and cartilage. These vocal cords open and close smoothly in their normal functions, but in laryngitis, this functioning becomes difficult, as the vocal cords get swollen and distort the sound produced. The symptoms of laryngitis are hoarseness, weak voice, sore throat, dry throat, dry cough, etc. The causes of this condition are viral infections, inhalation irritants, acid reflux, chronic sinusitis, etc.
‘Swara bheda’ is the term for laryngitis in ayurvedic text. This is caused as a result of vitiation of doshas, which is due to atyuchcha bhashana (speaking loudly), visha (effect of toxins), adhyayana (reading loudly), and abhighata (trauma); which enters swaravaha srotas and cause Swara bheda by destroying the voice. The accumulation of Vata and Kapha dosha along with ama obstructs the channels of the respiratory tract that makes difficulty in breathing, in extreme cases.
Thus, the treatment for laryngitis in ayurveda focuses on balancing of vitiated doshas and expelling toxins from the body. This is brought in by therapies like shastika ahali pinda sweda, patra potali pinda sweda, and uro basti. The treatment is also accompanied by intake of herbs like tulsi, vasa patra, kantakari, mulethi, pippali, saunth, laxmi vilas rasa, etc. that help to ease the pain in the throat and reduce hoarse voice. A proper diet and exercise regimen are also suggested to balance the vitiated doshas and boost metabolism. This line of treatment helps in reversal of the condition in a natural way.

Thus, the treatment for laryngitis in ayurveda focuses on balancing of vitiated doshas and expelling toxins from the body. This is brought in by therapies like:

Shastika ahali pinda sweda: In this, the shastika shali rice is cooked in kwatha and dugdha; pottalis are prepared, and the patient is given a massage with those pottlis. This helps in balancing the imbalanced kapha and pitta dosha.

Patra potali pinda sweda: In this, the herbs are heated or fried and tied in a bolus to provide heat to specific parts of the body. This helps in eliminating the accumulated kapha dosha and also balances vata dosha.

Uro basti: In this, medicated oil is retained on the chest wall that gives a positive influence on heart chakra and strengthens mind and heart. This helps in the rejuvenation process and nourishment of faulty tissues.

The treatment is also accompanied by intake of herbs like tulsi, vasa patra, kantakari, mulethi, pippali, etc. that help to ease the pain in the throat and reduce hoarse voice.
