Effectively Heal Restless Leg Syndrome

Why EliteAyurveda

How are we able to Treat Restless Leg Syndrome

Restless leg syndrome (RLS) is also known as Willis- Ekbom disease (WED) which is a neurological disorder. RLS causes unacceptable sensations in legs like tingling, crawling or pulling sensation, also with a powerful urge to move them. These urges are more intense when a person is relaxed completely or is trying to sleep. The main problem with people having RLS is, it interferes with their sleep cycles that causes daytime sleepiness and fatigue. This loss of sleep can further lead to depression, nervousness and stress.

As RLS is a neurological disorder, it is caused due to imbalance in Vata dosha- Vata Vyadhi. According to Ayurveda, all the motions and senses are governed by Vata dosha. The properties of Vata dosha consists of dryness, roughness, intense, coldness, mobility, etc. and when it gets accumulated, it causes excessive dryness of the protective layers of the nerves, which disturbs the nerve conduction. When this damage of nerves is slow, RLS is manifested when the targeted nerves are legs.

The treatment for RLS involves balancing to Vata dosha and targeting the nerves which are affected by RLS. Further treatments and medicines are employed for Twak Gata Vata, Gridhrasi chikitsa and Mamsagata Vata. The procedure also involves the panchakarma procedures to eliminate the toxins and accumulated doshas in the body. This line of treatment allows to reverse the condition effectively.

Understand how we can help you with Restless Leg Syndrome

Types of restless leg syndrome:

The causes of restless legs syndrome (RLS) might be either primary or secondary.

  1. RLS (primary RLS) is a neurological condition. Although the majority of persons with RLS develop symptoms in their mid-twenties, some may show indicators of the condition as early as infancy. It might take years for their symptoms to become a regular occurrence.
  2. Secondary RLS is more severe than primary RLS and is caused by another underlying disorder, such as one of the following:
  • Anaemia or low blood-iron levels
  • Folate deficiency
  • Nerve damage due to diabetes or other conditions
  • Kidney disease or dialysis
  • Attention deficit disorder (ADD)
  • Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
  • Pregnancy
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Parkinson's disease

Signs and symptoms

  • Persons with RLS have an uncontrollable impulse to move, which is accompanied by unpleasant feelings in their lower limbs that are unlike those felt by people who do not have the illness. Their leg feelings are frequently difficult to explain, although they can be described as hurting, throbbing, tugging, itching, crawling, or creeping.
  • Because moving the legs (or other affected body parts) soothes the discomfort, persons with RLS frequently keep their legs moving to reduce or eliminate the feelings. They may pacify the floor, sit with their legs continually moving, and toss and turn in bed.

Causes of RLS

  • Iron deficiency
  • End-stage renal disease
  • Haemodialysis
  • Consumption of alcohol, caffeine and nicotine
  • Nerve damage
  • Last trimester of pregnancy
  • Allergies from drugs like antipsychotic drugs, antidepressants, antihistamines, etc.

Frequently Asked Questions

Our Treatment is a unique customised program. Here are some of the most common questions
patients ask about the program.

When nerve cells are destroyed, the quantity of dopamine in the brain decreases, resulting in muscular spasms and involuntary movements. Dopamine levels normally decrease at the end of the day, which may explain why restless legs syndrome symptoms are generally greater in the evening and at night.

Simple ways to treat restless leg syndrome are-

  1. Soaking legs in warm water and massaging them
  2. Application of warm or cold packs
  3. Having a routine exercise regimen
  4. Avoiding intake of coffee, especially in evening
  5. Consider a vibrating pad, acupressure pads or a foot wrap.

Restless legs syndrome and its symptoms are frequently associated with anxiety disorders such as generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, panic disorder, and others.

Iron deficiency is the single most consistent result and the most significant environmental risk factor related to RLS.

The main foodstuffs that can cause RLS are chocolates, fried foods, caffeine, energy drinks, and sugary sodas.

As RLS is caused due to deficiency of iron, the foods like red meat, liver, spinach, leafy vegetables, dry fruits, poultry, pork, seafood, cereals, beans, etc. help to calm down RLS.

The therapies like Abhyanga, Shirodhara, Panchakarma, Rasayana, intake of herbs and changes in lifestyle help in the condition of RLS.

The herbs like ashwagandha, kapikachhu, guggul, triphala, ginger and spices are beneficial in the condition of RLS.
