How Does Our Hypertension Treatment Benefit You?

Hypertension, also known as high blood pressure, is a common condition in which the force of blood against the artery walls is high enough that may eventually cause health issues like heart diseases. Blood pressure is determined by the amount of blood the heart pumps and amount of resistance to flow of blood in arteries. The blood pressure is raised when the arteries get narrower as the heart pumps more blood. The symptoms of hypertension are shortness of breath, headaches, nosebleeds, etc. If not treated, it may also lead to stroke, heart failure, metabolic syndrome and other such complications.
‘Raktagata Vata’ is the term for hypertension in ayurvedic text. It is the abnormality of Rakta dhatu and is known as shonit Dushti. The vitiation of Vata, Pitta and Kapha dosha affects the blood pressure. The vitiation of Kapha dosha increases cardiac strength, but due to its sluggishness, the kapha dosha itself is decreased. Further, vitiation of Vata and Pitta dosha leads to increase in blood pressure. Thus, intake of salt, alcohol, oily diet, day time sleep, mental accidents; leads to vitiation of blood, which affects the doshas and leads to forceful expulsion of blood through dhamanis, that causes increase in resistance in vessels i.e. high blood pressure.
Now, when it comes to treatment of hypertension in ayurveda, it focuses on elimination of toxins from the blood and balancing the vitiated doshas. This involves panchakarma therapy that helps to get rid of toxins from the body and re-establishing heart health. This therapy is followed by other therapies like Virechana, Vasti, Shirodhara, etc. The entire procedure is accompanied by intake of certain herbal formulations that include- Lashuna, arjuna, ashwagandha, brahmi, jatamansi, giloy, gotu kola, amalaki, etc. These herbs also promote metabolism which directly impacts doshas and balances them. This line of treatment helps in reversal of condition in a natural way.

Types of hypertension

  1. Primary hypertension: There is no known cause of elevated blood pressure in most persons. Primary (essential) hypertension is a kind of high blood pressure that develops gradually over several years, and the reason can be age and unhealthy eating habits.
  2. Secondary hypertension: Secondary hypertension is caused due to some underlying conditions like obstructive sleep apnea, kidney disease, adrenal gland tumors, thyroid problems, defects while birth in blood vessels, intake of certain medications and drugs like cocaine and amphetamine

Complications of hypertension

  1. Stroke or heart attack: High blood pressure can induce atherosclerosis, or the hardening and thickening of arteries, which can lead to a heart attack, stroke, or other issues.
  2. Aneurysm: Aneurysms arise when blood arteries weaken and bulge as a result of high blood pressure. This condition can be fatal.
  3. Heart attack: The heart needs to work harder to pump blood against the increasing pressure in your veins, causing the thinking of the walls of the heart's chamber. The swollen muscle may eventually struggle to pump enough blood to fulfill your body's demands, leading to heart failure.
  4. Kidney blood arteries may become weak and constricted. This can make it difficult for the organ to operate properly.
  5. Blood vessels in the eyes are thickened, constricted, or torn. This may cause eyesight loss.
  6. Metabolic syndrome: Increased waist circumference, elevated triglycerides, reduced high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol (the "good" cholesterol), high blood pressure, and high insulin levels are all symptoms of this syndrome. Diabetes, heart disease, and stroke are all more probable if you have these illnesses.
  7. Trouble in understanding and remembering: High blood pressure that is uncontrolled might impair your capacity to think, recall, and learn. People with high blood pressure are more likely to have memory or understanding problems.
  8. Dementia: Blood flow to the brain can be restricted by narrowed or clogged arteries, resulting in dementia (vascular dementia). Vascular dementia can also be caused by a stroke that blocks blood supply to the brain.
